Okay, considering the topics I normally work with, this might seem like a real odd ball. To me it’s a serious topic, as I have based most of my life on the practice of High Magick Ritual.
To start let me tell you what High Magick is, at least what it is to me. It is not an easy subject to approach, because ultimately High Magick is what you want it to be.
For some it is a religion, or part of their religion, and not all members of a particular pagan set practice it, nor even if they do necessarily in the same way. High Magick is a very personal thing.
I have at one time or another identified as a Wiccan, a Witch in the more “traditional” sense of a power hungry fiend, a straight Pagan since I mix my styles without care of their source, and currently a Practitioner of Chaos Magick and my own style of nocturnal witchcraft (do a search for the occult author Konstantinos) enhanced Necromancy.
So, what is High Magick?
It is a way to connect to the energy of the universe directly with ones’ mind and will. By using ritual to “disconnect” from mundane (everyday life) reality, practitioners seek to connect with that energy in order to subtly “push” events n our favor. Care is needed in these pursuits, since when a spell works it does so by the path of least resistance. That is to say, the way it would happen most naturally.
So if you do a particularly powerful spell for money, make sure you make the desire to not harm anyone in the process a strong aspect of your “will working” or you might end up having a bad accident that will net you high workers comp, or someone close to you with a large life insurance policy with your name as beneficiary, might die.
Hey, if it was simple everyone would do it.
Now, this is largely just my point of view on High Magick. Each person that practices it will give you their own views on the topic, as I said at the beginning it is a very personal thing.
Psychology and Science play just as much of a roll in it to me, as mysticism and mythology. To me a huge difference between doing a spell, and prayer is the “go after it” principle.
When people pray, they just want their god to hand them what they want on a silver platter, thay are far less likely to get anything because they don’t pursue it directly. They leave it up to their god to decide.
High Magick Rituals and Spell work on the other hand, utilize positive reinforcement, and a “go getter” attitude to achieve things. By which I mean, you feel more confidant because your spell is backing you up, and you know that actively pursuing your goal will give the spell more natural paths to take, in order to nudge things in your favor. A self reinforcing system. A real practitioner of High Magick never just sits back and waits, he/she goes after the target of their desire with all tenacity and skill at their disposal.
In the end it all depends on what you want it to be. A way to meet people that see things the way you do, a more natural way to tune into the world around you rather than the de-humanizing, and unnatural dogma of main-stream religion, the pursuit of power, any and all are valid reasons to seek the path of High Magick and Paganism.
Sound Off-tell me what you think. Think I’m nuts, or a sage. Either way, let me know.
