1. I am the Lord your God: Subjective, as there are many versions of Christianity, and Judaism that don’t agree with each other, let alone the fact that there are thousand(if not millions) of other religions that have, and still do exist.
2. You shall have no other gods before me: Previous leaders of the times tended to be open minded about religion allowing the people to choose what they wanted to believe in, the whole point of a monotheistic (one god) religion is to take away the right to choose. You are with them or against them.
3. You shall not make for yourself an idol: same as 2. Note: Modern bibles tend to blend these three together to get one so they get 10, and not 12. 10 is a more psychologically pleasing number.
I also find the insecurity displayed here interesting. To take these commandments at face value the Judaeo-Christian god is both insecure about his followers loyalty, and jealous of the other gods. Yes, once again taken at face value, he must have felt threatened by those gods. Also saying “no other gods before me” does not mean they aren’t there, or that his followers can’t believe in them, just so long as he gets the lions share of the worshiping, and is first in his followers eyes.
4. You shall not make wrongful use of the name of your God: Pointless, a supreme being would not care about such trivial things. Unless he is just a very touchy god. This ties in rather well with the insecurity revealed in the above commandments. He is an insecure god with a delicate ego.
5. Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy: Pointless, and not well observed.
6. Honor your father and mother: I say they should earn it like everyone else.
7. You shall not murder: Should go without saying. Also seems to get forgotten a lot by Christians through history.
8. You shall not commit adultery: Don’t really have a problem with this one, although consensual adultery has been proven to improve a married couples sex life.
9. You shall not steal: Also should go without saying. And also not observed very well, as Christians started the crusades which included a great deal of ste… ahem, plundering.
10. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor: Would be easier to just say “don’t lie”, but that would put the clergy out of business. It’s a good idea, you shouldn’t talk trash on your neighbors.
11. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife: Coveting is having a desire for. If a man is attracted to a women, he will desire her. This is natural. To me this is an out-and-out attempt at mind control.
12. You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor: Same point as 11, but with an additional point here. Coveting the goods of your neighbor usually leads to going out and buying something better to “one up” him/her. This helps the economy. So this one is pointless, and a bad business idea.
