Ahhh the eternal struggle of the nerd vs the jock. Well this is more about the way they are viewed, particularly by girls.
What makes a geek a geek and a jock a jock?
Looks? No, “looking geeky” is a result of the life-style not the cause.
Athletic ability? No, I am a geek and I have a great body-type for several sports, just no desire to pursue them.
High Intelligence? No, many a gamer and geek are just average.
What then, creates this line in the sand.
Perhaps it’s reading.
Those that learn to enjoy reading early in life learn to appreciate the imagination. Those that don’t, go into more worldly pursuits.
Perhaps it’s just genetic.
Something that naturally leads a person to more interests of a more cerebral nature.
Perhaps it’s a form of autism.
That might strike many as odd, or even insulting. However, my understanding of autism is that it is a withdrawal into one’s mind. Most geeks withdraw into Gothic stylism, fantasy, science-fiction and other escapist fare.
I personally think that is the crux of it. Be you a gamer, goth, Computer guy, pagan, or whatever form of escape you are indulging yourself in, you are trying to escape from something. For some it might be more obvious. A troubled home, or the like.
I personally think it’s dissatisfaction with the world in general. We are born having to deal with some heavy shit, most of it the result of actions we can do nothing about. Is it any wonder we draw back in horror at the world around us, and retreat into something more fun?
As for the jock. They have their reasons too. It might be an overbearing father they want to please. Maybe they feel stupid, or have been made to feel stupid, and think athletics is the only way they can shine.
Perhaps they are the lucky ones that see the world, and are either up to the challenge, or just don’t care enough to fight it.
I find it telling that over the last 8 or so years computer and console gaming have become a form of accepted geekery. I don’t just see it as technology becoming accepted as mainstream. These are forms of escapist fair that are easy. No imagination required, and they
have become very, very popular. Of course, there is a lot more to escape from now. And even less we can really do about it.
This finally brings me to the female aspect of this shindig.
What is it about geeks that turn back girls so much? Or at least used to. As I said the lines are blurring. Perhaps we are entering a time when the jock and his all American outlook is starting to look like a load of bullshit, and the geek with his games and movies is looking like the guy with the right idea.

I think it’s more an assumption that girls wont like you if you enjoy “geeky” pastimes that causes the problems.
Try inviting that girl you like to a gaming session. Tell her a bit about the game, and try and get her curious. Don’t use jargon, or game terms. Tell her you think she would like the game because…
Look I can’t do all of it for you. You like the girl, you should know something about her. Use that to invoke curiosity.
That is the key. You must become interesting. There is nothing interesting about a guy that likes to pretend he’s an elf, unless you can express to her why you enjoy doing so.
There is nothing cool or sexy about whining. If someone is badmouthing your hobbies, bad mouth theres right back.
A jock is also just playing games after all. If a jock is fucking with you, remind him that football is also just a game, and he has a better chance of getting struck by lighting than getting into the NFL. Sub appropriate sport for your bully of course.
I also whole heartedly endorse the bad ass image approach of the goths. Why just pretend to be a vampire on weekends when you game?
Hell, go to a gym and get in shape and learn to actually use a sword, and bow. Show up to school dressed as conan and show off those
hard muscles you worked so hard on. The assumption that geeks can’t enjoy their hobbies and be bad asses is as much to blame for lumpy bodies, as the sedentary lifestyle geeks tend to have.
Point being if you want to get her attention, you need to become alpha dog in her eyes. Your hobbies have nothing to do with that.
You need to stick up for yourself, and take no shit just because you prefer fantasy to reality. Be quick with a comeback.

Most of all never let anyone make you think you’re wrong to enjoy those things. It’s your life, and you should be able to enjoy the things you want to do without catching grief.
As long as you don’t let them control you. Playing WoW for 30 or 40 some hours is not being a dedicated gamer, you are an addict, get help.
There is a big difference between indulgence and compulsion.
As a word of warning don’t do what I did, and never fight back. I would be a far happier person if I had broken a few noses in school.
So yes, if you have a bully picking on you. Bust him in the face. Kick’em in the balls. No shame, no holding back.
Sorry parents, but there is no other way to deal with a bully. Your kid needs to kick’em in the nuts and bash’em in the face a few times.
Make’em think twice about messing with “the weakling” again.
Heres a good one. A kick to the balls to drop’em and a couple of kicks to the kidneys. Pissing blood for a couple of days ought to put some fear in’em.
To those who say violence never solves anything, bullshit. Most teachers wont do shit to help kids out anymore, they don’t get paid enough.
Besides if a bullies targeting you no amount of scolding will stop it. You have to fight back.
